> Pronunciation: (TAH-noo-kee)


> English name: Raccoon dog spirit


> Distinctive features: Upright raccoon dog with a cheeky, mischievous face, round belly, oversized magical testicles, leaf or straw hat, sake bottle, IOU notepad, and a large stick or staff.


> Powers: Shapeshifting, illusions, trickery, luck manipulation, fortune telling, minor magical feats.


> Habitat: Forests, villages, rice fields; occasionally near human settlements.


> Claim to fame: Tanuki are playful tricksters who amuse, confuse, and humble humans. Folklore shows them shapeshifting into objects, people, or animals, stealing, or playing pranks, but rarely causing harm. They also bring luck and prosperity, and some shrines honor them as symbols of good fortune. Their oversized testicles are used for everything from drums to parachutes in stories and are a cheeky signature of their unpredictable magical nature.
